You propose a big project, Roy. Quick thoughts:
- considering the size of major rivers, the amount of DO that would be needed would be tremendous; and it would have to be constant since rivers move (i.e., all the oxygenated water would move downstream and the supposed unoxygenated water upstream would come down)
- pumping a lot of DO into the water is likely to cause supersaturation, i.e., more DO than the water can actually hold; and that extra DO would either escape to the air or could cause metabolic and physiological issue in aquatic organisms
- so long story short, it would be a massive effort and the "side effects" would have to be well understood before undertaking it (which is probably why - along with the cost - such projects have not been attempted in places like the Gulf of Mexico and the Chesapeake Bay, where low DO "dead zones" are common)
- how about you write up an article on the idea and see what kind of input you can get; if you post it to Political Futures I can feature it
